SEWAGE DEPARTMENT TRAINING PROGRAM

How an Elevated Sandmound Works

The effluent flows from the laterals and flows through the aggregate (a bed of stone). A coating of beneficial bacteria (bio-mat) forms on the aggregate.  The bacteria consume substances found in the effluent.  However, contact time with the aggregate is short so renovation of the effluent is limited.

The wet areas show the locations of the holes.
