SEWAGE DEPARTMENT TRAINING PROGRAM

How to Repair an Elevated Sandmound

Regardless of the cause, the result is the same.  The soil, fine material, grease, and/or organic matter covers the surface of the sand.  The pressure of the pumped effluent pushes the foreign material into the sand resulting in a loss of permeability.  With reduced permeability, the effluent fills the aggregate.  The pump continues to pressurize the effluent until the effluent pushes out of the mound at the point of least resistance.

In the event that there is no weak point to relieve the pressure of the effluent, the pump will operate for excessive periods until it burns out.
